Grid integration of renewable energy: connecting wind and PV

How wind and solar parks are connected to the power grid, which steps the grid connection involves and what role construction supervision plays at the substation.

The most expensive part of an energy project often lies not in the modules or turbines but in the grid connection. Without clean grid integration no plant feeds in, and this is precisely where planning and construction supervision decide schedule and viability.

Why grid integration is the bottleneck

A wind or solar plant generates electricity that only has value once it reaches the grid. Grid integration covers all technical and structural steps by which a generation plant is connected to the public grid, from the array cabling through the substation to the point of connection with the grid operator.

In practice this part often determines the project schedule. Permits, grid compatibility and the availability of the connection point lie outside your own site fence and must be coordinated early.

The grid connection process

Connection requestThe request to the responsible grid operator, who assigns the connection point and the grid level.
Grid compatibility studyProof that the feed-in does not load the grid impermissibly.
Connection designSizing the cable routes, switchgear and substation for the agreed capacity.
CommissioningAcceptance by the grid operator and release of the feed-in.

Each of these steps has its own deadlines and parties. If the grid compatibility study or the connection point is delayed, the plant stands still despite finished modules.

The substation as the heart

Wind and PV parks generate electricity at medium-voltage level. To transport it over greater distances and feed it into the high-voltage grid, it is transformed to a higher voltage level at the substation. Transformers, switchgear, protection technology and control form a tightly interlocked system here.

The substation is the structurally and technically most demanding trade of an energy project. Errors in protection technology or earthing often only show up at commissioning, when the correction becomes expensive.

The role of construction supervision

Construction supervision at the grid connection combines civil engineering, steel construction and electrical engineering. It supervises the cable routes and foundations, checks the assembly of the switchgear and ensures that earthing, lightning protection and the protection concept meet the grid operator’s requirements.

Because several trades and the grid operator meet at one interface, coordination is decisive. Experienced construction supervision holds the acceptances, test records and deadlines together so that commissioning does not fail over a missing certificate.

The grid connection operates within the framework of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG), the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) and the technical connection rules of the grid operators (TAR, VDE application rules). These rules set out how a plant must be built technically in order to be allowed to feed in.

For project success, what counts is anchoring these rules early in planning and execution. Whoever only considers the grid connection at the end risks expensive retrofits and a postponed commissioning.

Häufige Fragen

What does grid integration of renewables mean?

All technical and structural steps by which a wind or solar plant is connected to the public grid, from the cabling through the substation to the point of connection.

Why is the grid connection often the bottleneck?

The connection point, the grid compatibility study and permits lie with the grid operator and outside your own site fence. If they are delayed, the plant stands still despite finished modules.

What role does the substation play?

It transforms the plant’s electricity to a higher voltage level so it can be fed into the high-voltage grid. It is the most demanding trade of the project.

What does construction supervision monitor at the grid connection?

The cable routes and foundations, the assembly of the switchgear and earthing, lightning protection and the protection concept, and it coordinates the acceptances with the grid operator.
